Case Study Presentation
As a (future) member of the workforce, one of the skills you should develop is that of clear and concise presentation. If your career path leads you into research activities, you will often be required to present your research in an allocated timeframe. If your career path leads you into either project development (individually or as part of a team) or management, you will often be required to present your project details, budget information, etc. within an allocated timeframe.
Therefore, I ask you to present your case studies to the class. A Hands-on Guide on How to Analyze a Case Study is provided for you. Detailed presentation requirements are as follows.
I. Rules for the Presentation
- Your total presentation should last approximately 8-10 minutes. Points will be deducted for presentations falling significantly short or going significantly over the total allocated time limit. A short question and answer period may follow your presentation.
- You must do each of the following in your presentation (failure to do so will result in deduction of points):
- introduce yourself and your company
- provide a short summary of your case
- discuss the IT significance/issue(s) in the case
- discuss the solution(s) adopted by the company to address the issue(s)
- discuss success/failure of the adopted solution
- provide analysis, insight, additional research and/or follow-up, etc.
- use the WWW during your presentation to show something relevant to your case study
- clearly state what/how resources beyond your textbook were used
- It is expected that you will not limit yourself to the case details and questions provided in your textbook. You are expected to use additional resources, such as magazines, books, web sites, etc. when presenting your case to the class.
- You may be creative in your presentation -- e.g., powerpoints, skits, videos, websites, etc.
- It is expected that are you interested in your company. An important part of your presentation is to motivate your audience and generate interest from your audience. You want to have a lot of energy in your presentations!
- Absolutely no notecards, pages, etc. are allowed during your presentation. You are expected to know your material and use your presentation slides to guide you, if needed. You are expected to have eye contact with your audience and not read off of your slides. This is a very important component of your presentation!
- Avoid overpopulating your slides.
- Do not read verbatim from your slides. Points will be deducted for simply "reading" from your slides.
- Avoid using "um." 1 point will be deducted from your overall grade for each "um" used during your presentation.
II. Visual Aids
- You will have the whiteboard and the computer and projection system available to you. Be cautioned that writing on the whiteboard or demonstrating on the computer tends to take up a lot of (your allotted) time.
- You may also use handouts, but only if you feel these will help enhance your presentation.
- You may also use powerpoint, or any other presentation tool.
- You may distribute samples, but only if you feel these will help enhance your presentation.
III. Hints
- I would strongly recommend that you practice (out loud) and time your presentation
prior to presenting to the class. Repeated practices will help you meet the
time regulation.
- Practicing your presentation will also help you in organizing your presentation
and speaking clearly and concisely.
- Active participation (asking intelligent questions) in presentations by
others is encouraged and will be rewarded when computing your own grade.
IV. Grading
Components contributing to your grade will include, but are not limited to:
- adherence to time regulation
- content clarity
- visual aids, if any
- presentation clarity
- organization of the presentation
- confidence and comfortability (e.g., lack of fidgetting)
- avoidance of "um"
- creativity of the presentation
- active and intelligent contribution and participation in presentations by
others
